Slain Soldier Was Gunman’s Supervisor, Police Say
A Fort Bliss soldier shot and killed his supervisor before he was shot and killed at his home Monday morning, police said.
Investigators said Wednesday that James Steadman and Lykisha Gooding were assigned to the same unit at Fort Bliss, where she had filed disciplinary action against him.
On Monday, police said Steadman went to Gooding’s East El Paso home, which is located on the 3700 block of Coco Palm Drive in the upscale gated community of Las Palmas, or the Palms.
When Steadman approached the front door, he was met by Gooding’s husband, Kelvin. That’s when police said Stead shot Kelvin Gooding in the face and continued to the upstairs, where he shot Lykisha Gooding several times, killing her.
Police said there was child inside the home who managed to escape unharmed.
When Steadman started to leave the home, Kelvin Goodman and Steadman exchanged fire. Steadman was struck in thigh before fleeing. Kelvin Goodman was taken to a hospital where his condition is unknown.
About an hour and a half later, police were dispatched to Steadman’s home on the 8000 block of Kenneth Street in Northeast El Paso, where he was reported dead.
Crimes Against Persons investigators said Steadman had arrived at his home with a gunshot wound to his upper thigh when he got into a physical fight with his wife, who has not been identified. During the altercation, a handgun discharged, striking Steadman in the upper torso. He died at the scene.
The investigation continues.
