Georgia Tech And Utah To Face Off In 78th Annual Hyundai Sun Bowl

Georgia Tech and the University of Utah will be going head to head on New Year’s Eve for the 78th annual Hyundai Sun Bowl.

Executive Director Bernie Olivas made the announcement at the Sun Bowl offices Sunday evening. “We are excited to get these teams, which are both recent BCS teams. They bring a lot of wins to El Paso,” said Olivas.

Last year, the 77th Hyundai Sun Bowl match-up between the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish drew more than 54,000 people. Notre Dame won 33-17.

According to a survey contracted by Sun Bowl officials, the game generated $24.6 million in total economic activity during the last week of 2010 through direct, indirect and induced dollars. That’s the biggest economic impact for a Sun Bowl ever.

Ticket sales were also record-setting in 2010. The game sold out in 21 hours, with many of the ticket holders driving or flying to El Paso from out of town to support their teams.
