Room At Las Cruces Motel Catches Fire; No Injuries Reported
The owner of a motel where a room went up in flames said they heard screams coming from the room, but said the person was able to get out.
No injuries were reported a blaze at the Desert Oasis Inn, which broke out about 10 a.m. Wednesday at 1765 West Picacho in Las Cruces.
Crews reported seeing heavy black smoke and flames coming from the eaves of the roof and from a vacant bedroom upon arrival. Firefighters immediately entered the room and brought the fire, which extended into the walls and ceiling, within 20 minutes from dispatch time.
The structure and contents sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. Damage to contents and structure is estimated to be $20,000. A spokesman for the Las Cruces Fire Department said the fire started because flammable material was left too close to a heat source.
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the two residents who were displaced from the fire. The American Medical Response and the Las Cruces Police Department also responded.
There were no reports of firefighter or civilian injuries.
