Juarez Murder Rate Decreases 45% In 2011

According to numbers gathered by author, researcher and NMSU librarian Molly Molloy, who studies the violent city, in 2010 there were more than 3,622 murders in Juarez. In 2011, 1,976 people were killed there.

Juarez’s homicide rate plummeted by about 45 percent in one year. Molloy gets her statistics through several sources including Juarez authorities.

ABC-7 asked El Pasoans if they’d visit Juarez, given the decline in homicides. “I haven’t been there in years, no desire. There’s nothing to go to Juarez for. Juarez used to be a nice place to go and eat, and have a good time and dance or whatever. Not anymore,” said one man.

Another man, though, had a different opinion. “At this point, you gotta go, eventually. You can’t just keep hiding. And maybe if we keep going, then maybe people will stop being so scared and hopefully things will get better, too,” he said.
