Shots-Fired Call Leads To Discovery Of Meth Lab, Las Cruces Police Say

A Monday evening report of shots fired led police and Metro Narcotics agents to the discovery of a home where methamphetamine was being manufactured, according to Las Cruces Police officials.

John Hamilton Jr., 44, a resident of the home in the 3900 Saddle Fork Ct., was arrested on a felony warrant from Santa Fe, N.M. Hamilton is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center .

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday, Las Cruces Police were called to the home after someone heard gunshots coming from or near the home. First arriving officers spoke with Hamilton’s brother who said he was cleaning a gun when it accidentally discharged. The exact reason why the gun was fired twice is not yet known, police said.

Police said officers attempted to make contact with Hamilton but he initially refused to exit the home. Hamilton subsequently exited the residence and officers entered to secure the scene and verify that there were no victims inside the home.

Upon entering the home, officers discovered several marijuana plants growing inside the house and materials commonly used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine, according to police. Las Cruces Police summoned agents from Metro Narcotics who took over the investigation.

Police said so far Metro Narcotics agents have uncovered 32 marijuana plants, chemicals and equipment used to manufacture methamphetamine, and several firearms within the residence where Hamilton lived. Hamilton has a previous felony conviction.

Metro Narcotics is continuing their investigation and has not yet filed charges related to the drugs or paraphernalia discovered inside the home. A New Mexico State Police hazardous materials team was called to safely collect evidence and materials from within the residence.
