County Seeks To Renew Burn Ban

El Paso’s county commissioners are set to vote to renew the burn ban that would make outdoor burning a misdemeanor.

By law, the county can only enact a ban on burning for 90 days at a time. Since April 2011, county commissioners have been renewing the ban due to serious drought conditions.

The El Paso area has been in a drought for years. But this year, the county has only seen 0.85 inches of rainfall compared to our average of 1.65 inches at this same time. The last time El Paso had measurable rainfall was in mid-April.

All these conditions have prompted the Texas Forest Service to categorize our area as one with “very high” risk of fire danger.

The county is set to vote on the burn ban Monday morning during its regular meeting.
