Home gas prices going up

Gas rates are go going up again.

El Paso City Council unanimously approved a slight increase in Texas Gas Service rates on Tuesday in order to avoid a rate case they said could have cost residents and businesses
more in the long run.

The approval of this latest increase follows another rate increase from last year.

Another increase is expected next year, according to the gas utility.

Norman Gordon, the City’s outside council for utility matters, said after a 31-cent increase last year, the City settled on an increase of 41 cents per month or about $5 per year for the residential customer this year – 20 cents less per month than Texas Gas Service requested. That is equal to a $1.33 increase for the commercial customer per month, or about $17 per year – 64 cents less per month than the utility requested.

Although City Council voted unanimously for the increase, some questioned why growth doesn’t pay for itself.
