Short Knights Play Big

This year the Hanks Knights went a perfect 16-0 in district play and are ready to make a deep playoff run.

“We worked hard all summer and set a bar to be at the top,” Hanks senior guard Josh Velasquez said. “It takes character to stay at the top and we have good character, so that’s why we went 16-0.”

A year ago this team in 5A made it to the sweet 16, but now as members of 4A are looking for another memorable post season.

“They’ve really accepted the challenge,” Hanks coach Manny Flores said. “They’ve worked really hard and are ready to make another run in to the regional tournament.”

Interestingly the team plays five guards at a time, because the tallest member of the team is 6’1.

“It shows we play harder then other teams,” Hanks senior guard Angel Williams said. “We know how to box out, play harder with out the size, and we put in the effort and play harder to beat the other teams.”

The Knights quest at a title run starts Tuesday night against Jefferson, and despite this team’s lack of height, they have already proven they shouldn’t be overlooked.
