World Series Grandmas

Two residents at an El Paso Retirement Center have family competing in the World Series. Wednesday night at the Rio Norte Retirement Center Game one of the World Series from Fenway Park was watched on several televisions.

“They have that Green Wall there, it’s going to be a devil over that green wall,” 92 year old Helen Wainwright says. “I bet St. Louis wins it tonight one to nothing.”

For two El Paso grandmas family pride is on the line.

“We are not going to watch the game together,” Lola McDonald grandmother of Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey said. “I’m probably going to watch it locked up in my room.”

Lola McDonald is the grandmother of Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey, who will pitch in game two of the World Series. Helen Wainwright is a relative of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright who took the loss in game one of the World Series.

“I keep her informed on sports,” Wainwright explains.

“He wanted to be a ball player all his life,” McDonald explains. “How many people get to do what they always wanted to do?

Both women are proud, but also really good friends. For the next week they are putting their differences aside.

“I’m going to shake my friends hand and wish her a win,” Wainwright said holding a Cardinals t-shirt.

Wainwright pitched in game one and took the loss. John Lackey will start in game two for Boston. When this is all over though, both women said their friendship will stay in tack.

Before game one was played, Helen Wainwright predicted the Cardinals would win the World Series 4-3. Lola McDonald did want to make a prediction.
