Socorro ISD has new superintendent

The Socorro Independent School District has a new superintendent.

The president of the SISD board, Michael Najera, said their new pick for superintendent didn’t come easy.

“We’re fortunate to have the two candidates that made the decision so difficult.”

Dr. Joe Espinoza got the nod.

The other candidate was Michael Sorum.

School board members traveled to Houston to interview Epinoza’s colleagues at the Houston Independent School district. They met stakeholder groups who work closely with the candidates.

Najera said the board is confident Dr. Espinoza is the man for the job at SISD.
“He’s very well respected, he advanced the academic outcome of Houston ISD and we just felt that he was a good fit for the district.”

Espinoza has been a counselor, a teacher, an assistant principal, a principal and a district administrator.

As the school improvement officer at Houston ISD, he supervised and counseled principals to meet district goals and focus on student academic growth.

SISD officials said Saturday the decision to hire Espinoza had a lot to do with who they felt would best push the district forward into the future.

Espinoza will have to wait 21 days to start at SISD, as per state mandates.
He will replace Dr. Xavier De La Torre.
