Investigators are at the scene of a deputy-involved shooting in front of East Picacho Elementary in Las Cruces.

A Dona Ana County official told ABC-7 that at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a Dona Ana County Sheriff’ss deputy driving near Valley and Westwind Road was flagged down by a man claiming he had car troubles.

Officials said when the deputy stopped to help, the man got out of the car with a gun. Sheriff’s officials said the man threatened the deputy with the gun and the deputy shot the man.

The man ran off but was found later about half a block away. He was flown to University Medical Center in El Paso with non life threatening injuries.

The man has been charged with felony aggravated assault on a police officer, a fourth degree felony. That charge could be upgrade to attempted murder after investigation is complete. That decision is up to the district attorney’s office.
