Nation, Borderland honor the fallen on Memorial Day
As President Obama paid his respects at the Tomb of the Unknowns this morning, thousands of Borderland residents honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Fort Bliss officials and 1st Armored Division soldiers held a Memorial Day Service Monday morning at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. The service, complete with a 21-gun salute, was held to honor those servicemen and women who gave their lives in defense of the United States.
Major General Sean B. MacFarland, the new Fort Bliss and 1st Armored Division Commanding General, addressed those in attendance at the cemetery, sharing a story about his time and loss in combat.
” I am not completely free of the deaths of any of the Soldiers in my command. They hover silently around me, springing into my thoughts when I least expect them. They probably always will.”
In Northeast El Paso, Cub Scout Packs 105 and 8 honored the veterans housed at the Ambrosio Gullen Veteran’s Home by lining the driveway with American Flags.
Cub Scout officials tell ABC-7 many of the scouts are themselves children or siblings of soldiers.
