Gov. Susana Martinez attempts to repeal licensing law
Governor Susan Martinez has tried it before — she says she’ll try it again. We’re talking about a license law already on the books in New Mexico.
This week federal agents arrested three people for illegally trying to obtain a New Mexico driver’s license. That’s because in New Mexico, you don’t have to be a legal resident in order to get a license. You do, however, have to be living in the state of New Mexico.
In this case — those three people weren’t. This reignites a debate we’ve seen play out several times before. The governor has tried three times to get the laws that allow non-residents to get licenses.
It’s sparked debate and even caused protests throughout the state. This is what she said the last time our new mexico mobile newsroom sat down with Martinez to discuss the issue: “It actually is not a right…People are coming to our state for the mere purpose of producing fraudulent documents…Then they leave our state with a government ID.”
