Woman jumps out of car, struck by other vehicle

EL PASO, Texas – Police have identified the woman killed early Wednesday morning as Vielka Cruz, 27. She was arguing with her husbandFred Merriwether, 32, when she opened her door and jumped out of the car, according to police. Another vehicle, driven by a 23-year-old woman, then struck and killed Cruz.

The crash happened at 1:46 a.m. on I-10 eastbound near the Raynolds exit ramp. It’s the first deadly crash of the new year.

Police confirm Merriwether, who was driving the vehicle, as well as the other driver were not intoxicated at the time. However, investigators suspect alcohol to be a factor with Cruz.

I-10 eastbound was closed from Copia to Raynolds as police investigated the crash. The area has since been reopened.
