Red-tinted Ruidoso water declared safe to drink

Ruidoso officials say municipal water is safe to drink despite taking on a red tint.

Ruidoso Utilities Director Randall Camp told the Ruidoso News on Wednesday the reddish hue being reported in the water is not hazardous.

Camp says the color is the result of a large shift in water resources during recent wildfires.

He says Ruidoso diverted water to the Grindstone Reservoir and that chemistry led to the water turning somewhat red.

Camp says there is nothing wrong with the water and it is like having “one big vitamin in a glass.”

Officials say water from Eagle Creek wells stored in Alto Reservoir will be treated and added to the village water system. He says the color is only a temporary condition.
