Thousands expected at Sunland Derby on Sunday

Race day is just around the corner and this weekend’s Sunland Derby at the Sunland Racetrack & Casino is expected to draw out 18,000 people.

The winner of the race gets $800,000 and 50 qualifying points to make the Kentucky Derby.

Most of the horses arrived earlier this week and are now ready to race.

This year’s race features horses from some of the best trainers in the business.

Last year Sunland Park broke a New Mexico horse gambling record with more than $3.6 million wagered on the day of the Sunland Derby.

This year, Sunland Park is expected to break that record once again and top the $4 million mark.

The race begins at 5:40pm Sunday.
