El Paso International Airport wants to make it easier for travelers to rent cars.

More than 1.4 million visitors a year walk through the doors of the El Paso International Airport every year

More than 200,000 of them rent a car to get around the Sun City.

On Saturday, the airport will implement a major change as it gets ready to build a brand new, three-story car rental facility.
During construction, travelers will have to pick up their rental cars in one of the parking lots.

“We’re moving the car rentals to what used to be part of the short-term parking lot,” said Jeff Schultes, deputy director of El Paso International Airport.

Schultes says the move will make it easier for people pick up the cars.

“By doing it here, we can have the customers be very convenient so we’re not busing them to another location and it just makes sense to have them right in front of the terminal,” said Schultes.

But what about travelers who park their vehicles in the short-term parking lot?
Will the move cause a lot of headaches?

Shultes says no. There is plenty of parking.

“Yeah it may not be exactly where they want it but we do have more than enough parking,” said Schultes.

“I was like oh my god,” said frequent flyer Jaime Garcia.
Garcia doesn’t like the idea.

“So now it’s going to be very crowded as you can see already. So your flushing people further and further,” said Garcia.

Schultes says there will also be other options.

They are placing click and park parking spots, where you can reserve parking online.

“We got twenty spots that they can reserve and have a spot right next to the terminal,” said Schultes.

For now, airport officials are asking travelers to be patient.

Construction shouldn’t take that long.

“It’s a small airport it should not be that difficult,” said Schultes.

The construction of the new facility will begin in June and is expected to take about two years to complete.

Schultes says as always you should arrive about an hour or before your flight to avoid any delays.
