Las Cruces Police arrest man for allegedly downloading more than 200 images of child porn

Las Cruces Police have arrested a man for allegedly downloading more than 200 images of child pornography within the past nine months.

Michael Herber, 44, of the 2900 block of Lake Valley Ave., is charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

A Las Cruces Police computer forensics expert learned through an automated software program that a computer in Herber’s residence was possibly being used to download or share child pornography. Police said that data gathered during the investigation indicated that more than 200 files containing child pornography were possibly logged on a computer within his residence between Oct. 2012 and Jan. 8, 2013.

A Las Cruces Police detective, computer forensics experts and agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations on June 12 executed a search warrant on Herber’s home. Police said evidence collected during that search warrant revealed electronic devices with numerous files of child pornography.

Herber was arrested June 14, and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $25,000. He posted bail and was released from custody after his bond was reduced to $5,000.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case, child pornography or any previously unreported cases of criminal sexual contact with a child is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.
