Dona Ana residents worried about damaged electrical pole

More than a week ago, a driver in Dona Ana crashed into an electrical pole near Dona Ana Road and Loomis Drive.

The pole nearly snapped in half. The damaged pole is still standing today.

Residents in the area are wondering why it hasn’t been removed.

“It doesn’t even look like they fixed anything on it,” one resident said.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office said a driver lost control of his car and crashed into the pole. The driver walked away with no major injuries.

Witnesses said it was a scary sight.

“The scariest part was when the car was still up against the pole, whether it would come down and land on top of the car,” one witness said.

More than a week later, the pole is still crippled, leaving some residents scared of driving by it.

“I think it’s still going to fall. It doesn’t look any different from last week, so I think it’s still dangerous,” one resident said.

Teresa Souza, a spokeswoman for El Paso Electric, told ABC-7 that workers put up a replacement pole. They attached the damaged one to the new pole with a wire for support. Souza said the pole is secure, but they cannot take it down at this point.

Souza said the pole is attached to cable television and telephone cables.

“They assured me the pole is securely tied with sky wire and it won’t go anywhere. As soon as those cables are transferred to the new pole, then we’ll go ahead and remove the old pole,” Souza said.

Souza could not give a time frame of when the damaged pole will be removed. She said it all depends on how quickly the other companies work.
