El Paso Catholic Bishop Mark Seitz speaks on ABC’s “This Week” on immigration crisis

El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz appeared on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Sunday.

Seitz, along with Texas Governor Rick Perry, spoke with ABC’s Martha Radditz regarding the immigration crisis on the border.

“A house that’s burning and people at the windows ready to jump, we can say as many times don’t jump. We can say as many times as we want, don’t jump help is coming,” Seitz said.

In his interview with Raddatz, Seitz used an analogy to put the ongoing crisis simply:

“And they’ll look for the safest place to land,” Seitz said.

He admitted the refugees do know there’s a strong possibility they will welcomed here in the United States:

“Many of them do know there are people in the U.S. who would receive them and that’s where they go,” Seitz said.

At previous hearings in Washington he made a number of suggestions for short term responses, ultimately, to exercise compassion towards these individuals.

Sunday, he reiterated that message.

When asked by Raddatz what he thought of Seitz’s suggestion, Governor Rick Perry did not respond. Instead he alleged the Obama administration ignored the issue in 2012:

“In May of 2012, we sent a letter laid out what was happening with what was happening with the unaccompanied minors and we’re seeing that become reality today” Perry said.

According to Perry with the number of immigrants crossing the border expected to grow, the United States must now direct it’s attention to securing the border:

“I don’t think you’re going to be able to address it, until you put the resources there and that’s boots on the ground, we’re asking for the FAA to allow for drones to be used….secure our southern border,” Perry said.
