New Mexico House of Representatives approves ban on e-cigarette sales to minors

New Mexico’s House of Representatives has unanimously approved a measure to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.

The proposal passed the House on Thursday and goes to the Senate for consideration.

The measure would prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to those under 18, just as minors are restricted from buying cigarettes made of tobacco.

Battery-powered e-cigarettes heat a liquid solution, usually containing nicotine, to create vapor that users inhale.

More than 20 states ban store sales of e-cigarettes to minors.

Supporters said the proposed ban is needed because children may consider e-cigarettes a safer alternative to tobacco although the nicotine used in the devices is addictive and the risks of inhaling nicotine remain unclear.
