Body found in Texas near border was Guatemalan boy

South Texas sheriff’s officials say a body found this month in some brush near the border apparently was an 11-year-old unaccompanied immigrant from Guatemala.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra scheduled a news conference for Monday morning.

The sheriff’s office says the boy was found June 15 near La Joya (luh HOH’-yuh), about 20 miles west of McAllen. Authorities received help from the Guatemalan consulate and believe the boy was from Huehuetenango (way way tuh-NAHN’-goh), Chiantla (chee-AHN’-luh), Guatemala.

Further details weren’t immediately available.

More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended entering the U.S. illegally since October, creating what President Barack Obama has called an “urgent humanitarian situation.” Most are from Central America.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was scheduled to address the government’s response later Monday in McAllen.
