Las Cruces man allegedly kills mother with sword

Police say Joshua J. Hunt, 35, allegedly used a sword to kill his mother, Lisa J. Cano, 56, early Friday morning in the East Mesa in Las Cruces.

ABC-7 spoke to Hunt’s neighbors, they didn’t think he was capable of committing a horrendous crime.

“He seemed like such a good person, and I don’t know it was really creepy,” Jasmine Munoz, a neighbor, said.

According to Las Cruces detectives, Hunt allegedly killed Cano, due to a long-standing feud between the two.

“You don’t hear of people getting killed like this, with a sword you know,” Munoz said.

Detectives say Hunt woke up early Friday morning and contemplated the way Cano treated him for the past couple of years, before allegedly deciding to kill her. Neighbors however, would have never guessed there was anything wrong between the two.

“I mean, like they loved each other, and friendly, the guy was very friendly,” Rodolfo Acosta, a neighbor, said.

According to Las Cruces Police, Hunt’s wife and two young children were also home at the time of the murder, they were all unharmed. For now, neighbors say the family will be in their thoughts and prayers.

“I just want to send my prayers to them,” Acosta said.

Hunt has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Tampering with Evidence, he is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center, on a $500,000 bond.
