Bullet fired in home lands in neighbor’s bed
El Paso Police arrested a 24-year-old man Tuesday night after he allegedly fired a handgun and the bullet landed in his neighbor’s bed.
Officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of Plaza Verde at about 9:40 p.m. regarding a shots-fired call and the investigation revealed that Westley Handy was at his home on the same street when he discharged a handgun.
Our ABC-7 I-Team obtained an affidavit that explains the bullet apparently traveled through a window in the home Handy was in, then into a roof of the next-door neighbors home. The bullet crossed through the ceiling, into a headboard, and landed on the neighbor’s bed, documents said.
ABC-7 went to the home of the shooting, where a man told our crew it was his roommate who shot the gun. The man would not give ABC-7 his name or comment on camera, but did say Handy was cleaning his gun when he accidentally fired it.
The affidavit, however, says otherwise. The documents indicate Handy told police he was in the military, and very familiar with guns. According to the documents, Handy was intoxicated and uncooperative with police, but did tell them he found the “black in color” hand gun on his mattress, and proceeded to shoot the gun.
ABC-7 visited the next-door neighbors home, but no one was answered our knocks.
Other neighbors in the area said they were surprised the event occurred.
Danny Garcia, a man who has lived on Plaza Verde for around 15 years, said his wife noticed police vehicles down the street Tuesday evening.
He told our camera he wasn’t necessarily shocked by the event, but thought it was strange because the neighborhood was usually so quiet.
In the documents, it appears the neighbors made the “shots fired” call after noticing a white powder coming from their roof. They initially didn’t know what caused the hole in their ceiling, the documents said.
No one was injured in the shooting.
Handy was placed under arrest and charged with deadly conduct and booked into the El Paso County Jail on a bond of $5,000.
Our I-team also obtained paperwork indicating Handy has two prior arrests, including assault of a family member and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He received deferred adjudication for those, meaning he did not receive jail time but may now.
