Get Well Soon Fund set up for woman hit in downtown Saturday
A 60-year-old woman was hit on Mesa Street and Missouri Avenue in downtown around 10 p.m. Saturday night, according to El Paso police.
People who reached out to ABC-7 said some call her Angelica, others Angela, but she’s mostly just known as the candy lady.
Now, several bars in in the Downtown area have her picture on tip jars, hoping to be able to give the woman some help when she recovers.
Chiquita’s, SOHO and Monarch are just a few of the bars accepting donations for a Get Well Soon Fund for the woman they said is a staple in Downtown.
“She was probably the most nicest lady I’ve ever met. The most nicest, sweet lady you’ll ever meet. If you came to Pride Square, you’ll know who we’re talking about,” bartender Jose Luis Reyes said.
Police haven’t identified the 60-year-old woman, but when people heard the news they turned to each other, and social media. They said she sold things nightly on foot.
The driver, a 26-year-old unidentified man from Ciudad Juarez, stayed on the scene and cooperated in the investigation. A police spokesman says he was never taken into custody, and no charges are pending. The spokesman didn’t have information about whether the driver underwent any sobriety tests.
In the meantime, those raising money say any little bit helps.
Organizers of the fundraiser said any amount helps, and after about a month all the money collected will go into a bank account set up for the victim who’s still in critical condition at University Medical Center.
