New Mexico sales tax holiday starts this weekend; Texas’ starts next weekend

It’s that time of year again! Back to school for students in the borderland means back to school shopping.

The tax free holiday in New Mexico began Friday. Between Aug. 1-3, retailers will not collect gross receipts tax from customers on back-to-school necessities. That includes clothing, shoes and school supplies.

In 2014, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on Aug. 8 – 10, the state’s annual tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.
