Former Irvin High theater teacher charged with improper relationship between educator and student
A theater teacher who taught at Irvin High School has been charged with improper relationship between educator and student.
A warrant for the arrest of Cecilia Schlesinger was issued on May 27 out of the El Paso Independent School District police department.
She turned herself in to the County Jail on May 29 and it is now a case with the district attorney.
Schlesinger resigned May 2 after an allegation she had an improper relationship with a student.
A spokeswoman for the EPISD told ABC-7 in early May that someone tipped off the district on May 1 and they immediately removed the teacher from the classroom.
The district won’t release details on the alleged relationship, only that it involved a male student.
EPISD says they will report the teacher to the state board of educator certification and that the district’s police also are investigating.
Schlesinger worked with Kids N Co. in 2012. Stella Gutierrez, the theater company’s board president, told ABC-7 in early May that they had not discussed the allegation made against the teacher and added that there are safeguards in place to prevent anything inappropriate from happening.
“The way we’re designed here at Kids N Co. , no one teacher is ever left alone with the kids,” Gutierrez told ABC-7. “We always have adults around. The experiences we’ve had with (her) have been positive. We never experienced anything inappropriate with (her).
Gutierrez added that Kids N Co. hasn’t had contact with the teacher since 2012.
