Longtime incumbent Mary Helen Garcia loses NM State Rep. District 34 race by 9 votes

Mary Helen Garcia, who has held the State Rep. District 34 seat since 1997, lost the Democratic primary on Tuesday by nine votes.

The district encompasses Dona Ana County.

Bealquin Bill Gomez has 405 votes or 48 percent and Mary Helen Garcia has 394 votes or 46 percent. Christian Lara has 52 votes or 6 percent.

There is no one running in the Repubican primary in this race.

Garcia is a retired school principal.

Gomez was an economist with New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service and retired in 2003 after nearly 30 years of marketing New Mexico products from alfalfa to wine.
