Police report states 18-year-old soldier drank shots before allegedly hitting 2 construction workers on I-10
El Paso Police do not know how an 18-year-old Fort Bliss soldier was able to get on a completely closed portion of I-10 and collided into construction workers working on Spur 1966.
According to the police report obtained by the ABC-7 I-Team, Jan Michael Nieves was traveling eastbound on I-10 at 2:27 a.m. on May 11 and collided into a large industrial crane, hitting a counter weight, and struck the two construction workers.
The deceased have been identified as 39-year-old James Green, of Runaway Bay, Texas, and 54-year-old Jimmy Joe Broadstreet, of Chaparral, New Mexico.
Green died at the scene and Broadstreet died while being treated at a hospital.
Nieves told police that he and his passenger had just left Gatsby nightclub where he had about three to four shots, according to the police report.
Nieves also told police he did not see the barricades or the machinery and that he was driving because his friend was “too (expletive) up” to drive.
The eastbound lanes of I-10 were blocked off from Sunland Park to Schuster due to the construction that night.
The police report states it is unknown how Nieves accessed the freeway as it was blocked off and off-duty officers were blocking off each entrance point to I-10.
