1 Juarez municipal police officer killed, another injured after being shot by unknown attackers

July 24, 2014 Update:

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman says that the three Mexican police officers detained during the incident July 23 were released at about 8:30 p.m. that night and returned to Mexico.

The wounded officer and girl are still hospitalized.

July 23, 2014 Story: One Juarez municipal police officer is dead and another is in stable condition after being shot at by unknown attackers Wednesday.

The municipal police officers were on foot when they were shot at multiple times at 1 p.m. in Central Juarez at the corner of Tlaxcala and Ave. Juarez, according to Juarez Police.

The officers were rushed to the hospital where one died.

He was 30-year-old Victor Eduardo Angel Vargas. The other officer, whose name was not released, is in stable condition.

A teenage girl also was grazed by a bullet in the back.

Multiple agencies participated in the search for the attackers.

During the search, three officers crossed the border into El Paso and they were detained by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Juarez’s binational relations department is working with the Border Patrol to get them released.

Three suspects were detained temporarily, but witnesses could not identify them so they were not arrested.

The U.S. Border Patrol also said the suspect(s) may have left the weapon used in the shootout in the Rio Grande riverbed, but confirmed no weapon was found.
