Ex-El Paso County assistant DA sentenced in bribery scheme

Former El Paso County Assistant District Attorney Antonio Reyes was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison Thursday morning in connection with a bribery scheme.

In addition to the prison term, United States District Judge Kathleen Cardone ordered Reyes to pay a $500 fine and be placed on supervised release for three years after completing his prison term.

Reyes pleaded guilty on April 21, 2014 to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and the deprivation of honest services.

By pleading guilty, Reyes admitted that from March 30, 2011, until April 15, 2011, he conspired with others through text messaging to accept cash bribes in exchange for dismissing pending criminal cases.

“Today’s sentencing of Mr. Reyes demonstrates the FBI’s unwavering commitment to the citizens of El Paso that we will vigorously investigate allegations of public corruption in our community and bring those responsible to justice. The FBI will not allow those who are placed in a position to protect its citizens to make self serving decisions that put the public at risk,” stated FBI Special Agent in Charge Douglas E. Lindquist.
