Baby in Socorro child abuse case has died

A 21-year-old Socorro, Texas man could be facing more charges in a child abuse case because the baby involved has now died.

Arturo Montes Jr. is charged with injury to a child by omission earlier this week after he took his 7-month-old step-son to the hospital because the child wasn’t breathing.

According to the complaint affidavit obtained by the ABC-7 I Team Montes allegedly first told authorities that the infant stopped breathing shortly after he had bathed him.

But that story changed when Montes said he had left the child in a baby bathtub with the water running.

He allegedly then took the child and put him face down in the crib so he could cough up the water and then gave him a bottle and laid him down on his back.

Court documents state Montes waited about an hour before calling 911.

He’s now being held under a $50,000 bond.
