Police release IDs in East Side murder-suicide of former couple

3:06: p.m. Update: The El Paso Police Department have officially released the names of those involved in a murder-suicide Wednesday.

Police received a call at about 5:45 p.m. at an apartment in the 10700 block of Vista Del Sol where 26-year-old Jacqueline Valenzuela was found shot to death inside her apartment.

Detectives identified 27-year-old Carlos Torres, who was at the apartment when the shooting occurred, as the suspect in the homicide.

Police say Torres fled the scene in a vehicle that belonged to Valenzuela – a black 2012 Ford Focus.

Police searched for Torres and received information that he may have been in the Tom Mays Park area in West El Paso off of Trans Mountain.

Officers approached the vehicle and saw a man – identified as Torres – dead inside of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say the motive for the homicide appears to be jealousy as Valenzuela and Torres had recently broken off a relationship and Valenzuela had begun seeing someone else. The case remains ongoing at this time.

12:39 p.m. Update: Phil Jordan, the former El Paso DEA chief, has identified the woman shot and killed Wednesday in East El Paso as 26-year-old Jacqueline Valenzuela, a relative of his.

Valenzuela was found dead at a duplex on the 10700 block of Vista del Sol Wednesday.

Police found a car on Trans Mountain overnight that matches the description of the car the suspect – Carlos Torres – drove off in. The car, a black 2012 Ford Focus, also had the same license plate police were looking for.

A man’s body was found inside the car but police have not released the man’s identity nor said if he was the suspect.

“They were boyfriend and girlfriend and they had just broken up – about a week ago?” said Rebecca Barron, a friend of Valenzuela and Torres. “About a week ago. I mean, I guess he couldn’t accept it or something, I don’t know. We’re just like in shock. And he works with my son out in Odessa.”

Dec. 17 Story:

ABC-7 is continuing to confirm new information on the city’s latest homicide case and the manhunt now underway.

Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Mears told ABC-7 a 26-year-old woman was shot and killed Wednesday evening at a duplex on the 10700 block of Vista Del Sol in east El Paso.

Police are looking for a man suspected of being the shooter and stealing the victim’s car, but Mears did not confirm the suspect’s name on scene.

Rebecca Barron, a friend of both the victim and suspect, told ABC-7 at 10700 Vista del Sol that the alleged shooter’s name is Carlos Torres.

The name matches the same name an ABC-7 crew member heard on several “spot broadcasts” over police radios Wednesday night.

Barron told ABC-7 the victim and suspect had just recently broken up and the victim’s young son informed a family member what happened.

Barron gave the victim’s name, but ABC-7 is withholding the information until family can be notified.

Earlier Wednesday evening, our ABC-7 crew listened to a “spot broadcast” on police radios in which a suspect was identified by name, height, build and vehicle the suspect was seen driving. The spot broadcasts, also known as a “be on the look out” broadcast, also said there was a warrant out for Torres.

The broadcast also reported the man may be heading to Hobbs, New Mexico or Lubbock.

Mears said the suspect is likely armed and dangerous and was last seen on Vista Del Sol driving a black 2012 Ford Focus with Texas license plate CV4M816. Police ask anyone who sees the vehicle or the suspect to not approach, but call 911 instead.

Police are not identifying the woman who was found dead Wednesday morning.

Investigators expect the area surrounding the duplex to be blocked off until the early hours of Thursday morning.
