San Elizario ISD releases info on audit on grade placement practice

The San Elizario Independent School District has released information this week on the final external review into enrollment and grade placement practices at San Elizario High School during the 2008-2009, 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

The district’s board of trustees requested the review on Dec. 12, 2012 as a result of several internal investigations completed by district administration that revealed actions inconsistent with board policy in the way students were granted credits and classified into grade levels.

The internal investigations conducted by the district were initiated during the 2011-12 school year in light of recent allegations at other school districts in the region and concerns raised by San Elizario ISD staff members regarding whether proper student enrollment and grade placement procedures were being followed.

Research into these issues by district administration did in fact reveal that a former campus administrator had implemented practices that needed immediate attention and corrective action, according to a district statement.

On Jan. 18, 2013, after the internal investigation was completed and external review was in progress, the San Elizario ISD was notified by the Texas Education Agency that it had received a complaint about the district regarding these same issues.

The San Elizario ISD school board is diligently reviewing the findings and the administrative action plan to ensure that all issues are properly addressed and preventing similar situations in the future. The external review and all information developed by the School District has been provided to TEA.
