Update: Las Cruces Police release name of suspect killed in officer-involved shooting
Las Cruces Police have released the name of the man involved in a shooting and standoff with officers on Monday.
He has been identified as 29-year-old Jose Salas.
Three officers are on leave and all three fired their weapons at various times.
Police say the officers involved in the shooting will not be named as the incident is still under investigation by the Officer Involved Shooting Task Force.
It began as an investigation into a fight on the 1300 block of La Fonda on Monday.
Police say officers fired when Salas tried driving off in a stolen pickup.
The suspect then fled, parked the gray Ford Ranger in front of a house Utah St. when the tenant came out and asked what he was doing there.
According to the tenant, the man said, “One second,” he put some things in a tool bag and ran away.
Officials say he then ran into a drainage ditch.
Salas stayed holed up in the pipes for three hours. During that time police communicated with him to try and coax him out. When that failed, they used gas cannisters to try and flush him out.
Shots were fired after officials say he emerged from the drain holding a gun.
