Motion to suppress hearing for Daniel Villegas
As his retrial approaches, lawyers for Daniel Villegas want to make it difficult for the prosecution to get another conviction.
On Wednesday at 9 a.m., a motion to suppress hearing will be held. The defense wants the court to throw out a 20-year old confession given by Villegas.
Villegas spent 20 years in prison for the murder of two teenagers. Villegas always maintained his innocence, and said that an El Paso Police Detective had coerced him to confess.
While Villegas was out on bond, the Criminal Court of Appeals threw out his conviction.
The District Attorney decided to retry the case, with the trial scheduled for January 2015.
