El Paso Zoo loses peninsular pronghorn
The El Paso Zoo announced it unexpectedly lost one of its animals, Luigi, a 4-month-old peninsular pronghorn.
Luigi died Saturday, September 6.
Zoo officials said the cause of death is unknown, but preliminary necropsy reports showed that it may have been a generalized inflammatory or infectious issue.
“We are very saddened by this loss. We are keeping an eye on the rest of the herd and they seem to be doing fine,” said Tony Zydonyk, area supervisor.
Last week, zookeepers noticed Luigi was lethargic when he didn’t join the herd and immediately began treatment, but it was unsuccessful.
Peninsular pronghorns resemble an antelope and are considered an endangered subspecies.
