Parents protest outside of Zavala Elementary school

El Paso, Tx- Frustrated parents protested a potential school closure outside of Zavala Elementary school Thursday afternoon.

Zavala elementary school is in south central El Paso near Alameda and Hammett.
The protest comes following a report commissioned by EPISD.

It listed suggestions including closing schools, consolidating campuses and re-drawing school boundaries.
Parents held signs that read we love Zavala and don’t close my school, Stacey Vanegas has five children – two of whom are currently enrolled at the school.

She says the district has been trying to shut the school down for years she is worried because she feels her nightmares of the school shutting down seem to be coming to life.

Vanegas attended an open community meeting and found out about the consolidation. The district says it costs too much to run aging, inefficient, under populated schools.

Vanegas tells ABC-7 she thinks class sizes would be larger at another school, and that her children would not get the education they need ” we are a smaller school yes I understand that but our children get the right education they fight to get higher grades.

If they go and put us into another school with 500 that’s going to be 800 students how are the teachers going to handle this?” EPISD officials tell ABC-7 they will be holding meetings to seek input and keep the public up to date on any changes within the district.

The next meeting will be held at Burges high school. If you are interested in the survey about the possible school consolidation click here: https://www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=141504045408
