Ennis defeats Canutillo 41-13 in state semifinals

Canutillo’s defense came up big with a blocked punt two forced fumbles to keep the game close for a portion of the game.

But it wasn’t enough.

Ennis defeated Canutillo 41-13 to move on in the state playoffs to the championship game.

The Canutillo Eagles did what no other area 11-man team has done.

And that’s to play for the chance to go to a state championship game.

Ennis’ Tre Elliot takes the hand-off and runs it into the endzone to put the Lions up 6-0.

But Ennis missed the extra point.

Not long after, Canutillo about to receive the punt when the Eagles block the punt in Ennis territory and recover the ball.

It helped Canutillo get within field goal range and they capitalized, making the score 6-3 Ennis with the lead.

Ennis quarterback Devin Smith, looking for help, finds Thompson Taylor in the endzone.

Ennis converts the two-point conversion – but it’s negated because of a penalty.

Ennis increases the lead to 12-3.

Canutillo quarterback Javier Gomez drops back to pass and hits Gerson Aguilar for the catch in the endzone.

The score is now 12-10, Ennis still with the lead before increasing the lead to 20-13 at the half.

And Ennis was just too strong in the second half, pulling away for a 41-13 win.

Eagle fans at a watch-party at the Little Diner restaurant in Canutillo tell ABC-7 they’re were happy to see the team left it all on the field.

“We are very proud if our Eagles. We are a small little town so for them to get this far and to accomplish what they have is huge, very huge,” said owner of the Little Diner restaurant Lourdes Pierce.
