What does an earlier than usual Sun Bowl mean for El Paso?
Due to the inaugural College Football Playoff, the Sun Bowl has been moved up to the Saturday after Christmas.
ABC-7 learned it will be played close to the same date for the next six years. So, what does the date mean for El Paso? This year, organizers had less time for planning.
“I think Saturday now kinda opens up the game to a lot more people to be able to come,” Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. It appears others agree with him, as well.
“I think it’s better. I think, Saturday, more people will come down. People from Arizona will have plans for New Year’s Eve over there,” one Arizona State Sun Devil fan said.
After all, fans are used to Saturday college ball. It is the day most college football games are played during the regular season.
Crunch time for organizers arrived four days sooner than years’ past. However, they say it will be a Christmas weekend hard to forget for years to come.
“We have scheduled events that have been planned for months now. Everything looks like everything’s ready,” Olivas said. “It should be a great, great Sun Bowl. If the weather holds up like it has been in El Paso, it should be a tremendous game.”
