Fire at Lamar Elementary to impact Tuesday’s classes

Students at Lamar Elementary in Central El Paso won’t have to go to school Tuesday, as school employees have to clean up damage caused by a fire, said a school district spokesman.

The fire broke out in a classroom Monday afternoon. How the fire started remains under investigation.

EPISD Spokesman Gustavo Reveles-Acosta said the class cancellation comes in the middle of high-stakes testing. Students in the fourth and fifth grades were scheduled to take the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR test Tuesday. They will be allowed to take the test Wednesday, instead.

Teachers and staff still have to report to work, and report to the gym Tuesday to receive their assignments.
