Missing El Paso teen found dead below Colorado mountain road

A Texas teen missing since last week has been found dead in Colorado after apparently crashing his truck off a curvy mountain road.

Rescuers pulled the body of 18-year-old Edgar Alfredo Vargas from the valley floor below Red Mountain Pass near Ouray Wednesday.

Vargas was a senior at Chapin High School in El Paso, Texas.

The Colorado State Patrol was working to remove Vargas’ red pickup truck from the canyon, keeping the roadway closed.

It’s not clear how long Vargas was there. Authorities have been searching for him since Friday. The pickup wasn’t visible from the highway but a helicopter search was done Tuesday.

An autopsy is pending but authorities believe Vargas’ death was an accident.

The ABC affiliate in Phoenix, where Vargas had relatives, reported that Vargas was on his way to a friend’s prom in Colorado when he went missing.

He was found about a mile away from where a Danish man died after going off the road in February in a suspected suicide.
