Massive food truck rally to benefit one of their own
The food truck community is banding together to help one of their own.
Robyn Renner, the owner of the pizza truck Red, White and Chew, is battling frontal lobe glioma — a brain tumor.
“I was scared,” said Liza Hernandez, a fellow food truck owner, told ABC-7.
Hernandez and her other food truckers, as they’re called, told ABC-7 this isn’t the first time Renner has battled cancer, either. Renner is a two-time survivor.
Hernandez, who runs El Jefe Mobile Taqueria with her husband, and their friend Art Nevarez of Big Dogs El Paso decided Renner wouldn’t fight cancer a third time without help.
“She doesn’t have physical family. She has us and we consider her family,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez and Nevarez decided to do what they do best: cook for the masses.
“We got a lot of the El Paso food trucks together and we decided we’re going to do a food truck rally,” said Nevarez.
The idea started small, with the nine trucks that typically set up together in parking lots all over the city.
But it soon grew to 40 food trucks in all, along with a car show, and other forms of entertainment.
“It was amazing to see how everyone is willing to help,” Hernandez told ABC-7 during a meeting at the food truck pop-up location on Dyer Street near Wren Avenue Wednesday evening.
A portion of the proceeds will go directly to Renner to help pay for her medical treatment.
“We just want to make sure she has nothing to worry about except her health,” said Hernandez, adding, “We want to take the burden away from her as much as we can so she can concentrate on getting better.”
“It’s one of our own,” Nevarez said. “It’s the El Paso way. We help each other out.”
As for how the El Paso community can help out, Nevarez said, “Bring your appetite.”
The food truck rally for Robyn Renner is Sunday, May 17 at the Cowtown Boots store on 11451 Gateway West from 12-9 P.M.
