Fallen hero’s name added to the Field of Honor Memorial

Family and friends gathered Monday to commemorate Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R.
Barreras as his name was added to the Field of Honor Memorial.

He was recognized for assisting in the rescue of Jessica Lynch from an Iraqi hospital after she was captured by Iraqi forces in 2003.

Barreras died on May 13, 2014 from his wounds in a May 6 attack in Afghanistan. That’s according to military1.com. He was 49.

Barreras, of Tucson, Arizona, was wounded in Herat Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Barreras started his service in the Marine Corps and five years later he joined the Army. He served 22 years with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Barreras completed multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operation Restore/Uphold Democracy in Haiti, and various other special operations. Barreras also served as the command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.
