Fire Destroys 2 Mobile Homes in Fabens
13 people are homeless after a fire destroyed two mobile homes, according to a spokeswoman with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials told ABC-7’s Luke Lyddon the chief of the Fabens Fire Department suffered minor injuries when a wall collapsed. EMS crews took the chief to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
The fire erupted at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday on the 100 block of First Street. The fire originally started in one mobile home, then spread to a neighboring home.
Patricia Esparza, left homeless by the fire, said she was not home at the time of the fire.
“I got a call from my cousin’s wife asking if I was alright, asking if I knew what was happening and she told me my house was on fire,” said Esparza. “The first thing that popped into my head was my family. You just never know.”
The damage estimate for both properties is estimated at $112,000, according to officials.
Firefighters from Socorro, San Elizario, Tornillo, Clint and Fabens helped contain the fire.
The Red Cross is helping the families who lost their homes.
