Will the Canutillo district raise enough money to paint flag mural?
Will the Canutillo flag mural actually go up?
After months of controversy between the district and a developer the red white and blue was approved to be painted but will the school have enough money to paint the mural?
A motion at a school board meeting Tuesday night would essentially use taxpayer money to pay for the flag and the school board voted it voted down.
It was in late March that the district got approval from developers Hunt Communities to paint the flag.
Initially the developers had made the district paint over a sample of the flag, saying the red, white and blue didn’t match the colors in the community.
Residents eventually voted to approve the flag.
Then the district set up a GoFundMe account to raise money and paint the flag for $38,000. The GoFundMe account has only raised $4,000.
Even though the district got the contractor to drop the price to $32,000, the district is still short about $28,000.
A motion was made to use contingency funds created by taxes to pay the balance. The board voted no.
Now the district says it has a deadline of June 16 to have the mural painted because of landscaping issues.
District officials say they will continue promoting their GoFundMe/Paintitback campaign to raise the money before the deadline.
