Flooding Problems Continue in La Union

it seems like la union, new mexico can’t catch a break! sot: mattie ortiz “when it wa coming down both ways, it scared me to death because my mom is 83 years old and i thought how are we going to get her out.” we caught up with this woman from la union in september 20-13, describing what it’s like just about every time the town is hit with rain. that time, a levee near mattie’s home broke, sending water rushing through the neighborhood. tonight, la union is once again under layers of mud. and residents say enough is enough. saturday night’s rain washed out streets in the town between el paso and las cruces. if you saw our stormtrack weather coverage over the weekend, then you saw homeowners spending the holiday like this … … filling sandbags and protecting their homes. abc-7’s jamie warren spent the day in la union to assess the damage… and to find out why it keeps happening. she is live with our new mexico mobile newsroom. jamie? a multi million dollar project. the dona ana county flood commision tells me that’s what it would take to stop water from a nearby dam from flooding the streets of la union everytime it rains one nearby dam is working the way it’s supposed to, releasing water in a controlled manner. the problem is it runs through the town. county flood commission director paul dugie says a project to fix that would cost roughly 7 million dollars. the flood commission is proposing to build structures that can divert the water in a different direction away from houses in la union. we’re told the project is in its very early stages and the flood commision would need to ask the county for money to fund the project paul dougie, director of dona ana county flood commision 23:19:53- 23:20;03 10 seconds anything that we do here is a multi million dollar project uh anything that we do lower then that because once we do something for la union the waters got to go somewhere and that somewhere will be affecting somebody else. rita avalos long time la union resident 11 seconds long and im tired yes im moving because im tired of this problem and im tired of what theyve done to my house rita avalos who you just heard from is hoping we dont have any more rain before she moves out the flood commision tells us that if it rains again it will completely flood this area once again jamie, the help can’t get there soon enough… thank you for the new information . as abc-seven tracks the chance for more showers
