abc-7 spoke with miss el paso and organizers about the controversy surrounding donald trump and the miss u-s-a pageant, in a story you’ll see only on abc-7 / “natural sound” “natural sound” chamizal fireworks went off without a hitch for the independence day celebrations– this, despite mother nature trying to rain on people’s parade. the wet weather this weekend didn’t stop people from hanging out and watching the fireworks light up the skies—spectators taking cover under their umbrellas and even blankets. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. a live look at stormtrack doppler radar is showing… good morning! happy monday. following a rainy weekend with some storms scattering over most the region at one point or another, we’re continuing that theme this week. the chance of rain will increase this afternoon and into this evening although we’re beginning with only cloudy conditions. the winds are light to breezy today and the temperature will still be hot back into the 90s. we’ll discuss the work week ahead, and your upcoming weekend in just a bit “it feels great because i think that women sports are underrated and i think that people underestimated the us and what they can do” the women took home the victory in their rematch against japan for the world cup finals last night. the ladies took an early lead and kept it to win their third straight world cup title. we’ll have the highlights coming up later on good morning el paso . donald trump: “no, there’s no apology because what i said is right. what i said is 100% right. there is tremendous distress on the border, you know that better than anybody. the mexican people are fantastic, the relationship i have with them is great. as i told you many many people have done business with me from mexico and i love the mexican people but no apology because what i had to say is 100% correct all you have to do is read the newspapers.” that was donald trump — saying he did nothing wrong when he said mexico that was donald trump — saying he did nothing wrong when he said mexico doesn’t send its best people to the u.s. … and instead sends drug dealers, criminals and rapists. the real estate mogul has seen some of his business deals fall apart because of his comments, but his poll numbers are strong in early primary states. that has some republicans pouncing: rick perry: “donald trump doe not represent the republican party. i was offended by his comments. hispanics in america and texas, have been extraordinary people, citizens of our country and of our state.” despite the criticism, n-p-r reports his poll numbers are strong in the early primary states. because of trumps comments– univision and n-b-c universal decided to not air the miss u-s-a pageant, and along with mexican media giant — televisa — will not broadcast miss universe . this weekend, trump came back to the fore after an undocumented immigrant was accused of killing a woman. he has stood by his original comments, refusing to back down. the situation has left some wondering if the hispanic contestants representing texas and california should drop out of the pageant. abc-7 spoke with miss el paso pageant organizer laura rayborn, whose event falls under the miss universe umbrella. while some are upset over trump’s comments, rayborn says the contest is bigger than one man’s political commentary: laura rayborn: this is something that 51 young ladies have had the experience to do this it’s been shown on tv for 54 years i don’t think it’s fair to just cut this out. estephania iracheta: “i don’t think that a single person should ruin a dream like being miss texas, miss usa, or miss universe, but due to the fact that he is the one in charge that he is the head of the program i would personally back down because i just don’t think that it is correct. the miss usa pageant will be aired on reelz tv this year instead of nbc. happening today– in an effort to reduce noise in some neighborhoods– the city is closing railroad crossings. the crossing at elm street will be closed for good– while the one at rosewood street will be shut temporarily. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with the details…denise? this is part of the five points quiet zone project. i’m standing near the elm street closure– one of four crossing that to be closed permanently. signs at the intersections have already been put up to warn residents of the closures. in 2013 and 2104– city council approved the quiet zone project. the price tag– more than 1.6 million dollars. it’s funded by the city and the el paso water utilities in an effort to sustain el paso’s infrastructure. the water utility will also replace uderground water lines along the tracks. one man we spoke with lives near rosewood street. and although that crossing will only be closed temporarily– he says it’ll be an inconvenience: “it’s going to be hard for us because we live here…so it’s going to be kind of hard” work is expected to be complete by september of 2016. one person is in the hospital this morning after a rollover on i-10 and airway yesterday. this is video from our tex dot traffic cameras. police tell us this happened just before four in the afternoon sunday. it’s unclear how the car rolled over. we’re told the driver was taken to umc.. a flight in a small aircraft turned tragic for two people in portland, texas on saturday. the pilot and the lone passenger were killed when the aircraft went down at a country club. additional details and the cause of the crash are uncertain at this time, but there were no other deaths or injuries caused on the ground. the national transportation safety board is currently investigating. authorities say a small plane crashed into crowded beach in southern california, sending a 12-year-old boy to the hospital with minor injuries. carson scott has the latest. tom scott friend’s dad regular tab only on 10news = a – non-live carlsbad boy hurt in plane crash recovering friends show support by shaving their heads regular tab only on 10news = cell phone video shows a small plane making a crash landing at a crowded carlsbad state beach saturday. the plane hit the water, flipped and landed upside down. hitting 12 year old nicholas who was body boarding with some friends. nicholas is pictured on the far left of your screen. sot carson scott “at the last second he saw it, and he almost fell back trying to get out of the way and i guess hit his face. titus and i were so scared” mic q carso scott is friends and attend valley middle school with nicholas. he showed us the body board nicholas used as a shield. sot carson scott “right here is where the tire hit him, down there’s blood right here but we tried to get all the blood off” mic q right after th crash, nicholas was bleeding from his head.. carson’s dad, tom.. who brought the boys to the beach.. jumped into action. sot tom scott “i was holding the back o his head just trying to keep him calm and waiting for people to show up” mic q lifeguards an paramedics quickly responded and took the boy to rady children’s hospital. nicholas’ friends say doctors had to shave his head for surgery. so his fiends are doing the same to show their support. sot luke “the fact that this wasn’t his choice making him feel better about it , maybe help him out and help him recover better” mic q friends say they’re looking forward to nicholas getting out of the hospital and say he’ll have a fourth of july story that will never be forgotten. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… this weekend brought some wet weather to the borderland— and one part received so much of the heavy rainfall that it flooded the streets … turning some into what looks like a lake. and later— california hasn’t seen enough rain to stop one wildfire from burning over 300 acres this weekend. / meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
