Five Men Convicted of Femicide in Juarez

Five men were convicted and one acquitted of human trafficking and gender-based aggravated murder by a three-judge tribunal in Cd. Juarez Saturday. The three-month trial came after the six men were arrested in 2013 for the deaths of 11 Juarez women.

According to the Chihuahua State Attorney’s office, the 11 women were reported missing between 2009 and 2010. Their bodies were found in the Juarez Valley two years later.

The trial took three months, during which the prosecution presented more than 150 witnesses, 60 documents, and 30 thousand photographs. The State Attorney’s Office said the men recruited the women using lies and threats. They said the women were then forced to sell their bodies.

The sentencing phase of the trial is next. The judges will rule this week and announce their decision Friday morning.
