Hundreds of SISD students begin class in brand new elementary school

The Socorro Independent School District started its 2015-2016 school year Tuesday morning.

As one of the largest districts in the county, SISD has seen a need for new schools.

Purple Heart Elementary School opened its doors for the first time to hundreds of students.

The school is located at 14400 G.R. Campuzano Drive in far east El Paso.

It will house kindergarten through 5th grade with a capacity of 800 students. School official said it has not reached capacity, but the school is receiving new students daily.

Purple Heart is the district’s 47th school.

Over the weekend the school healed its official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The school was also honored by representatives from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the first school to received the honor.

The name of the school is fitting for its location in a neighborhood where so many military families call home.
